Douglas Craver

In this series, we take a look at some of the bright and knowledgeable people behind our success here at AdEdge Water Technologies and see how they tackle their day-to-day challenges. Today we are here with Western Region Sales Manager Douglas Craver.

When I went to college I wanted to be Jacque Cousteau. I wanted to be a marine biologist.

When did you being working with AdEdge?
I have been with the company since 2011. I started right out of my home—I lived in Phoenix, and I’ve been covering that territory for many years. I worked for a company at the time that started to rep AdEdge, and then they were looking for a regional manager and so I came onboard.

How did you get into the water business?
When I went to college I wanted to be Jacque Cousteau. I wanted to be a marine biologist. So I got a degree in biology and chemistry, and it was impossible to get into grad school back then, so I ended up getting into the water treatment business. I started actually at a gold mine, and we had a de-ice system that wasn’t operational, and I read the manual and got it working. I only spent about a year at that job because it was up in nowhere-land Nevada. And so then I moved to California and got into the water business back in 1982, and I’ve been a water man since then.

How often are you on the road?
Probably 50 to 60 percent of my time. I cover the West Coast. We have reps in the Rocky Mountain states, the Northwest and northern California. I cover Arizona, New Mexico, and right now southern California and southern Nevada direct. I don’t have a rep in those areas, so I’m dealing directly with the engineers—the end users. I’m slightly different than some of our other regional managers because I do live in that territory and cover that area direct.

What are you morning habits?
I have not had to use an alarm for many years. I wake up in the morning well before my wife’s alarm goes off. I get up. I get my newspaper. I get my coffee. It’s the starter of my day. I wish I could say I eat breakfast early every morning, but many days around 11 a.m., I’ll come out of my office and realize I haven’t had breakfast.

What are the first things you do when you get into the office?
Usually by about 7 a.m. I’m back in my office, because my time zone’s different than Atlanta [where AdEdge is based]. I’m starting to get phone calls in the morning from the office sometimes. Typically I’ll open up my computer and go to my emails first, primarily because that’s where customers are sending me requests. Later in the morning I’ll go into Salesforce and update items as needed. I spend a lot of time on the phone and email with clients and customers. I cover 11 states and there’s a lot of activity out there.

Do you have any pets?
We have desert tortoises, so I go out and feed them in the morning. We’ve got two of them, and we have a little tortoise pen out there. We feed them spring mix and dandelions and things like that.
