In this series, we take a look at some of the bright and knowledgeable people behind our success here at AdEdge Water Technologies and see how they tackle their day-to-day challenges. Today we are here with RJ Cavagnaro, director of marketing.
I have a handheld disco ball and I dance it out for a solid 5 to 10 minutes. I'm that guy.
What is your role at AdEdge?
I am the director of marketing at AdEdge. I am the one responsible for putting together all the advertisements, the press releases, coordinating trade shows, creating literature pieces, all the social media posts that are out there. Basically I’m the one making sure AdEdge’s brand is out there in the marketplace.
What are the key values of the AdEdge brand?
Our biggest thing is our passion for clean water. We are a company where every single person from top to bottom is passionate about making sure that everyone has access to clean, safe drinking water. And so that’s one thing that we want to convey out into the marketplace. The other thing is we are a very agile company. We’re constantly bringing in new technologies and innovations, responding to the needs of the marketplace and trying to make things more efficient for the customers and also trying to make things cost effective.
What are your morning habits?
I am a snoozer. I am a person who has on my phone, I think, 25 alarms that go off every two minutes. I’m not a morning person. I live in downtown Atlanta, and my partner, Justin, usually has to tell me to get up! Then, I slowly roll out of bed, change quickly, and brave the morning Atlanta rush hour traffic.
How did you get into your particular field?
My dad actually is the one who started the company in 2002. I was a freshman in high school when he founded AdEdge. I worked during the summers and then during different vacations – spring break, Christmas vacations.
I studied comparative literature in college, so I’m a big book nerd. After college, I was contemplating what I wanted to do next. Did I want to go to grad school? I wanted to teach and get a second degree. And at that same time, they were looking for a temp to come to the company to implement a new customer relationship management (CRM) program. They brought me on board as a temp, and nine years later I haven’t left. So it started off with the CRM and then I started doing the marketing side of things with the organization. Our marketing guy ended up leaving the organization and I took over and I’ve been there ever since.
How do you combat the afternoon slump?
Every day at 3 p.m., I shut my door and crank up some tunes. I have a handheld disco ball and I dance it out for a solid 5 to 10 minutes.
Does everybody know you do this?
They do. I’m that guy. Some days it’s '80s music—"Nothing’s Going to Stop Us Now" by Starship. Tina Turner is played a lot and so is Robyn’s Dancing on my Own. I’m always cranking up the music. It’s what keeps me going throughout the day.
What motivates you?
My father started the organization, and that motivates me. But also, I am a tree hugger liberal. Clean water is a necessity. Everybody needs it. Seeing people who are affected by disease, death or malnourishment because of the lack of water, it motivates me every single day. It's that "Hey, I’m doing something to make the world a better place."
What’s special about AdEdge?
We really are a family. We have that atmosphere that we’re able to have constructive conflict, but five minutes later we’re hugging one another and everything’s good. And we’re joking around. We’ll go out to get drinks one night or stuff like that. We have this very tight bond as an organization that I think is very special. It’s very cool.
