Sam Miller

In this series, we take a look at some of the bright and knowledgeable people behind our success here at AdEdge Water Technologies and see how they tackle their day-to-day challenges. Today we are here with Senior Design Engineer Sam Miller.

I love problem solving and putting things together to create something that will soon be built to help others live a better life.

What are your morning habits?
Wake up at 5 a.m. Get myself ready. Wake kids up by 6/6:30 a.m. and get them ready for school. Make the kids some breakfast and feed Dixie our dog. Take my son to daycare then my daughter to Kindergarten. Then quiet time in traffic. I do like to sleep till 7 a.m. when my wife does not have to work.

What’s the first thing you do when you get in to the office?
Make myself a bagel normally, drink my coffee while reading emails and making a game plan for the day.

How did you get into your particular field?
I got into my field by watching my dad design farm equipment. Then he would go out and build it. I really enjoy seeing what I have created on paper come to life in the shop, and know that it is going to help people live better lives.

How did you end up working at AdEdge? What do you enjoy most about your job?
I moved to Atlanta from a small town in South Georgia, and was looking for a full time job while doing contract work. I was contacted by a recruiter in New York of all places looking for a candidate for AdEdge. I had just found a job at Baldor Motors in the quality department at the time, so I told the guy I was interested but had a job that I liked. I was contacted by Cliff Nelson a few days afterwards for a phone interview. He decided that I should come in and interview in person with him and a few others. I enjoyed the small company feel and people I had met so when the job offer came in I decided why not? It is a company that I can grow in and with, not like where I was at a major manufacturer. I love problem solving and putting things together to create something that will soon be built to help others live a better life.

What does a typical lunch hour look like for you?
This is quiet time for me. I cut off my lights and watch a few shows while eating lunch.

How do you combat the afternoon slump?
Coffee and more coffee. Then my slumps comes about 7 p.m. while trying to get kids ready for bed so I can sit and spend time with my wife.

What do you feel most proud of in your job? What are some challenges or obstacles you face?
Knowing that I'm helping others live better lives with clean water. AdEdge is a company filled with passionate people that all want the same thing. Some of the challenges I face with that in my work role is everyone wanting the jobs done at the same time. We have gotten better at this over time. We just have to communicate all the jobs going on and figure out which one is a priority to come up with the best plan of action to keep everyone on track.

What music are you listening to this week?
Chris Stapleton, classical and Baby Shark with a side of Frozen sound track.

Do you keep any unique possessions at your desk?
Pictures of my kids and wife, and a few UGA items

What’s something you always do before you leave for the day?
Walk around for few minutes to chat with people about their projects I may be working on. Then shut down and go home.
