A Day in the Life of Tyler Butel

In this series, we take a look at some of the bright and knowledgeable people behind our success here at AdEdge Water Technologies and see how they tackle their day-to-day challenges. Today we are here with Tyler Butel, technical sales engineer.

Every project has something unique about it. There’s never a dull moment and at AdEdge we have a culture of bringing in new technologies.

What is your role at AdEdge?
I am a regional sales manager, so I am on the sales team, but I prefer the title technical sales engineer. I cover the eastern U.S. and Canada. We just hired a new person for the northeastern U.S. that’s slowly taking over that part of the territory that used to be mine. So I might be in New Jersey but I might also have a project in Vancouver, B.C., so that’s pretty spread out.

How did you get into your particular field?
I’m also a mechanical engineer. I’ve designed prosthetic devices. I’ve worked as an engineer for seatbelt manufacturing, specialized seat belts, and eventually through a friend of a friend, they were looking for someone to work at their water treatment company in Oklahoma City. They also had a nonprofit that was going into communities in the third world, drilling a well and then establishing a kiosk where people would actually come and buy treated water, to create an economy around the well. So I got to design the treatment system inside that little water kiosk, considering all the limitations in the third world. That’s what jump started my career in water treatment.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety. There are lots of different projects that we’re working on with different technologies to help a lot of people. Every project has something unique about it. There’s never a dull moment and at AdEdge we have a culture of bringing in new technologies. In the last four years we’ve had three cutting-edge technologies. You’re always out there introducing engineers to those, how they can help, why they are important, and what value they bring to what the engineer is doing or what the city needs to solve. It’s very fun from my standpoint.

What are you most proud of in your job?
What we’re doing is bringing – in most of our products – a treatment solution to a community so they have better water to drink. If you just focus in on one home that’s connected to that distribution system, they’re now going to be drinking cleaner water and their kids are going to be drinking cleaner water. And that is really the end result. That’s why we do this. That’s where our passion is.

What music are you listening to this week?
This is an interesting question because a lot of people are surprised when I tell them which music is my favorite. I listen to a lot of different types of music – like folksy guitar – but most of the time I’m listening to metal, or screaming music as my wife calls it. So if I’m going out for a walk, walking the dog in the morning and I want to listen to music, I’m listening to a band called August Burns Red. And it’s a bunch of guitars and drums and screaming. It’s very technical, which is why I like it. They’re very skillful and I appreciate the message of their music.
